SUMMARY:On Paper Wings
DESCRIPTION:During WWII\, the Japanese military developed a new weapon in
tended to strike directly at the American continent – the balloon bomb
. High school girls across Japan were conscripted into factories where
they built thousands of balloons made of paper. These balloons were the
n attached to bombs and launched into the jet stream to drift toward Nor
th America. On May 5th\, 1945\, a pastor\, his pregnant wife\, and five
children departed on a picnic in Southern Oregon. When they found an u
 n-detonated balloon bomb\, the device exploded\, killing the pastor‚'s w
ife and all five children. They became the only people killed on the co
ntinental U.S. as the result of enemy action during WWII.Forty years lat
er\, a Japanese American man who had spent his wartime years in an inter
nment camp found out about these deaths. He knew several women in Japan
who as young girls had been forced to work on the balloon bombs\, and t
he news of these deaths shocked and saddened them. These women decided
to fold a thousand paper cranes to offer to the families of those killed
in Oregon\, and the groups eventually all met face to face. The friend
ships formed since have helped citizens on both sides of the Pacific cop
e with the tragedies they experienced during WWII.This is the story of f
our Japanese women who worked on balloon bombs\, the families of those k
illed in Oregon\, and the man whose actions brought them all together fo
rty years after WWII\, and the balloon bomb project.

SUMMARY:My Mother's Garden
DESCRIPTION:In the suburban setting of a quiet tree-lined street in Grana
da Hills\, California we see a 61 year old woman pushing a grocery cart
to her front door. We watch her climb through a window covered in ivy an
d cob webs into her house\, stepping on top of stacks of newspapers\, pi
 les of debris\, rotting material\, clothing\, and toys\; a living mass o
f waste that has literally pushed her out of the house and into her gard
en.My Mother’s Garden is the story of Eugenia Lester whose hoarding di
sorder has entered a dangerous and life threatening stage. Directed by h
er daughter Cynthia\, it documents how one family comes together to cope
with their mother’s disorder and rebuild a lost sense of family. My Mot
her’s Garden was an official selection of the 2006 New York IFP Market a
nd was a finalist for the IFP Socially Conscious Documentary Award. The
film has also received support from the 2007 New York State Council For
the Arts and the 2007 Pacific Pioneer Fund.Director’s statement:My p
ersonal journey through this documentary was necessary to heal the wound
s of abandonment\, isolation\, and dependency that are often present whe
n raised by a parent with a persistent mental illness. Though my brother
s and I are now adults\, we all feel a deep need for a stabilizing cente
r for our family\, a permanent place to call home. This longing for stab
ility has caused disorder in our lives\, both socially and emotionally.
Through this documentary\, I am applying my experience in social work\,
art therapy\, and filmmaking to my own family. I hope that the film can
be therapeutic as well as a creative work of art that will help bring aw
areness to the issue of mental illness and also reach others who are sym
 pathetic to this subject matter.

SUMMARY:An American In China
DESCRIPTION:Twenty-two year old David Braddock is floundering - stuck in
that lazy period between college and ‚"What am I going to do with the re
st of my life?‚" Even David‚'s best friend\, Sha is concerned with David
's aimless attitude. David‚'s parents pressure him to either choose a ca
reer path or join the family business. David decides to follow his fathe
r‚'s urging to "Go East Young Man.‚" Once in China\, he finds that it is
much different from what he imagined: full of bustling modern cities as
well as charming little villages. He travels to a town that the modern
world hasn‚'t yet altered and meets Mei: a beautiful\, ambitious young g
irl who works two jobs in order to save enough money to follow her dream
of going to the prestigious Beijing University. Despite their differen
ces\, a romance blossoms during the few short weeks that David is with M
ei. He returns home to San Francisco to find that his family‚'s business
is in even more difficulty than when he left. Sha encourages David to
return to China and see things though: both business and romance\, and t
ogether they head back to the middle kingdom. This coming of age\, fish
out of water story takes us on a fascinating journey to a world full of
strange customs and people. But cultural differences\, politics or dist
ance cannot change the fact that we all share the same basic desire: to
 love and be loved.

SUMMARY:Breaking The Maya Code
DESCRIPTION:There are over six million Maya today. They have a rich and
vibrant culture\, and have guarded their traditions with great care. Bu
t for four centuries they have been a people cut off from the written re
cord of their own extraordinary past. For almost 2000 years\, the ancient
Maya recorded their history and ideas in an intricate and beautiful scr
ipt. Then\, in the 16th century\, Spanish invaders burned their books a
nd ruthlessly extinguished hieroglyphic literacy. By the 18th century\,
when stone inscriptions were discovered buried in the jungles of Centra
l America and bark-paper books began to surface in the libraries of Euro
pe\, no one on earth could read them.Breaking the Maya Code is the story
of the struggle to unlock the secrets of the hieroglyphs\, arguably one
of the most complex writing systems ever created. It is based in large
part on the book by archaeologist and historian Michael Coe\, himself i
ntimately involved in the decipherment story. His book has been called
by the New York Times "one of the great stories of twentieth century sci
entific discovery". This is a detective story filled with misunderstandi
ngs and false leads\, rivalries and colliding personalities. It leads u
s from the jungles of Guatemala to the bitter cold of Russia\, from anci
ent Maya temples to the dusty libraries of Dresden and Madrid.Through on
e of the great intellectual achievements of the past 200 years\, the wor
ds of the ancient Maya scribes have begun to speak once more.

DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Barstow\, CA\, a town of about 9\,000 homes in
the Mojave Desert\, high school senior Andrew Dayton hopes for a bigger
world. Andrew lives with his somewhat irresponsible single mother\, San
dra\, a waitress. Despite being college material -- a quality noted by
his science teacher\, Mr. Johns -- Andrew seems to be slipping into the
inertia of Barstow. Mr. Johns aggressively challenges Andrew‚'s decision
to delay college\, painting a bleak picture of Andrew‚'s future if he d
oesn‚'t leave Barstow. This angers Andrew because he feels trapped\, bu
t deep down he knows Mr. Johns is right. In the midst of confusion\, Andr
ew meets newcomer Jenny and begins his first real sexual experience. Di
scovering the relationship\, Sandra becomes increasingly possessive whil
e at the same time throwing herself into her current fling with a much y
ounger man\, Cody. Andrew‚'s main ally is his best friend Carlos who sh
ares Andrew‚'s dreams of college and encourages him. Carlos surprises An
drew with the news that Andrew has been accepted to college\, but when A
ndrew goes to tell Sandra\, he finds her drowning in misery. Cody has s
tolen their few valuables and run off. Desperately relying on Andrew mo
 re than ever\, Sandra‚'s need and self-absorption overshadow Andrew‚'s n
ews as she grabs and clings to him. While Sandra sleeps\, Andrew contemp
lates\, weighing those who need him against the possibilities of life in
the larger world. Ultimately\, Andrew realizes he must make a choice b
etween himself and those he loves.

SUMMARY:Nobody Knows: The Untold Story Of Black Mormons
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps the most interesting feature of this documentary is a

footage of Black Mormon Gladys Knight\, and interviews with various Bla
ck Mormons of many backgrounds\, including three converts filmed initial
ly in 1968 and then again in 2007. These three men talk about their jou

its most important privileges from them and their families\, how it fel
t when the restrictions were lifted\, and how it feels today\, when ques

Blacks less valiant than whites in a pre-mortal life (also a prominent t

More recent Black converts are also interviewed\, and report a spectrum
of experiences within the LDS fold--everything from being called a 'Nigg
er' in a Mormon temple to feeling completely embraced into the faith\, a
nd even being called into leadership positions.

DESCRIPTION:Twenty-two year old David Braddock is floundering - stuck in
that lazy period between college and ‚"What am I going to do with the re

's aimless attitude. David‚'s parents pressure him to either choose a ca

well as charming little villages. He travels to a town that the modern
world hasn‚'t yet altered and meets Mei: a beautiful\, ambitious young g

is in even more difficulty than when he left. Sha encourages David to
return to China and see things though: both business and romance\, and t

SUMMARY:Forever Plaid – The Movie
DESCRIPTION:FOREVER PLAID is a musical comedy revue interspersed with wit
ty and insightful banter about the love of music\, and growing up\, and
“making one’s mark.” It is also about the everyday courage we need to f
ace life\, warts and all\, kind of a swinging American version of “Happy
Days” meets “The Full Monty” meets Tony Bennett (but more of that\, lat
er) chock full of all those “retro” songs that are cool again (e.g. Gwen
Stefani’s\, “If I were a Rich Man” and similar songs by Pink\, Mariah C
arey and Justin Timberlake). As Peter Allen once sang\, everything old
is new again. The current worldwide total box office gross: $265\,000\,
000 and rising. The show has played non-stop\, worldwide for nearly twe
nty years. THE PLAY: The story is a simple one of four young men st
ruggling to “make it” as a swing & standards “close harmony” group in th
ose pre-Beatles\, pre-“grassy knoll” days of our Perry Como innocence.
So what’s the problem? They’re dead! Wiped out by a bus full of Cath
olic school girls while the lads were driving in their now iconic red ’5
4 Mercury convertible to their first real gig (at the “Fuselounge” in a
local Pennsylvania airport). The schoolgirls\, by the by\, were okay.
But a second opportunity is now heaven sent to the FOUR PLAIDS. They’ve
been returned to Earth nearly 50 years later to put on the show they ne
ver performed in life. There are problems of course\, not least of which
is that they are dead\, the ultimate fish-out-of-water. And then there
are the more prosaic challenges\, like remembering lyrics and moves tha
 t they haven’t sung or danced in over 40 years\, and a nosebleed\, and w
orse. As the PLAIDS mount the stage\, a disembodied voice\, heaven
ly in cadence\, tells us about astral planes and harmonics and\, in gene
ral\, lays down the stakes. There is a perfect harmonic chord\, burie
d in the song “Love is a Many Splendored Thing\,” a chord the PLAIDS nev
er fully hit in life\, and they are needed here on Earth to hit it now\,
in death. Nerves are raw\, mistakes are made\, but bit-by-bit\, with c
onfidence growing\, they attack with increasing gusto the celestial musi
cal opportunity they’ve been given\, for each one of the four to achieve
the happy resolution of his redemptive arc\, and for the quartet to rea
ch the perfect chord and achieve perfect harmony. This harmonic chord i
s finally found and sung. It resonates with the harmony we all want\, i
n our lives and in our worldview\, all across America and around the wor
ld. It is the epicenter of the “feel good” explosion that is FOREVER PL
AID. It is meant to be a lesson to us all. Our movie version is set i
 n a fiercely trendy\, post-now club\, designed by multiple Tony and Obie
winner\, Neil Jampolis\, and peopled by glamorous extras with a ferocio
us fashion sense (and not a few celebs who love the show\, or have been
in it\, and want to be among the extras seated at the tables). Our cele
stial MC is David Hyde-Pierce. And so\, the PLAIDS intimidated by the
club\, and weirded-out that they “have bodies again\,” begin to put on t
heir show\, haltingly and error prone at first\, as in the play\, but th
en increasingly better\, tighter\, and more wonderfully and harmonically
complex as their confidence grows. And with their confidence comes coo
l\, real cool\, the kind of cool that all men want to be and all women w
ant to be with\, hot-sexy-cool. Also\, the “audience volunteer\,” alwa
ys a highlight of the musical play\, will be a surprise actress to be re
vealed at our red carpet media and celebrity event live before our studi
o audience. Add some CGI\, too. There’ll be the typical starbursts an
d glissandos and whatnot\, but we’ll also be “breaking out” of the play
from time so time\, so that when the Plaids talk about rehearsing in the
ir basement\, we are suddenly in the basement rehearsing with them! And
when they talk about the gas station where Perry Como’s limo broke down
\, we’re suddenly at a dreamy nighttime fantasy of a small town gas stat
ion as they sing their Como medley. At the climax the PLAIDS have bec
ome the cool characters they first set out to be nearly 50 years ago. T
hey’ve also come to realize what this night is all about. They’ve learne
d of the perfect harmonic chord. They know it’s in “Love is a Many Sple
ndored Thing\,” the very next number. Now they confront the Heavenly Fi
gure\, but they know in their hearts why it’s needed. And they feel sure
they can hit it. But do they want to? If they hit this chord they wi
ll have finished their mission on Earth and they will have to return to
heaven. The Heavenly Figure impatiently awaits the drama of their deci
sion… They sing\, of course\, and the moment will thrill us to our bon
es\, the way it’s been thrilling theatre audiences for two decades.
